The U.S. Institute for Healthcare Improvement is working with two-thirds of American hospitals to make surgery safer. They’ve developed a single-page checklist that requires just minutes to complete at three critical junctures of operative care: before anesthesia is administered, before skin incision, and before the patient is removed from the operating room.
In a pilot study, hospitals used this checklist that was developed by an expert panel convened by the World Health Organization as part of its “Safe Surgery Saves Lives” Initiative. Although it’s common for high school and college students to go for years without the benefits of health insurance coverage, this puts them at extreme risk.
One of the largest studies of how health insurance affects preventable deaths among children was conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Using data from 37 states collected from 1988 to 2005, investigators found that uninsured children have a greater risk of death than children with insurance regardless of their medical condition. If you’re ready for some good news about the economy, science has a new perspective for us. While we’ve traditionally focused on how harmful recessions can be, we’ve overlooked a major benefit. During recessions, and even the Great Depression, mortality rates in the U.S. and other developed countries actually declined.
Mortality rates rose, and life expectancy fell during periods of strong economic growth. This may be because economic growth means more pollution, and greater stress on employees to produce. People are likely to drink more alcohol, over indulge in unhealthy foods, and smoke during periods of economic growth, as well. The young and the healthy are tempted to scrip and save money by not buying health insurance because they don’t expect to need it. However, research is finding that health insurance in America is not a luxury that anyone can do without.
Americans who have no health insurance are more likely to die after being admitted to a hospital for trauma care than Americans with health insurance. That’s the findings of a report published in the November 2009 issue of Archives of Surgery. Uninsured adults have a 25 percent higher risk of dying than insured adults, and, according to the researchers, they account for approximately 18,000 deaths per year. Read the rest of this entry »

From uninsured young adults to seniors, new healthcare legislation extends the protection of Health Insurance in Florida. Parents will be able to keep children on their health plans until they are 26. That can cover one the most vulnerable groups in America in terms of lack of health coverage, and high rates of illness.
People with pre-existing health conditions will have new opportunities to purchase coverage from a federally-subsidized pool backed by $5 billion in federal money.
